Over 40 years ago, former Lancaster County Juvenile Court Judge W.W. (Bill) Nuernberger noticed factors that were keeping some young women from being successful at the YWCA Job Corps. Lucy Nevels, in an office with the Lincoln YWCA, knew that these young women needed a home, and Judge Nuernberger agreed.

Miss Lucy began her search with realtors who assumed she needed buildings that fit in with an institutional system, but she said, “No way.” She wanted these girls to experience an atmosphere of safety and nurturing–a real “home.” Lucy found the home on D Street and began a life-long commitment to the WICS Home For Girls.
